🌕 Moon gazing at Liliuokalani Park, Mango Festival & 808 Day in Kona

Every week after writing this newsletter, I scramble to find a relevant photo. This week I found a photo of Liliuokalani Gardens in Hilo, captured by Matthew Dillon on Flickr. If youʻre in Hilo, join the moon gazing with astronomers tonight (Aug 2)!

Hi friend!

It’s finally August — that also means schools are starting back up again this month, so plan accordingly! Traffic will resume and back-to-school shoppers will be out and about this month 😂

At the beginning of each month, you can catch Holualoa First Fridays and a Monthly Soul Skate on Kona side. If youʻre in Hilo, thereʻs a new First Saturdays at the Pacific Tsunami Museum you can look forward to every month! Go & support them on their free kamaʻāina day!

Looking for something to do this week? Here’s what’s happening on the Big Island. This is by no means an all-encompassing list, but a few ideas of events happening on Hawaiʻi Island.

Music + Dancing

  • Fri Aug 4: Holualoa First Friday, 5:30-8:30pm in Holualoa. Monthly block party after dark — live music, gourmet “grab and go” food, and a chance to mingle in the heart of Kona coffee country.
  • Sat Aug 5: First Saturday, 10-4pm at Pacific Tsunami Museum. Special showcase “Work Like a Dog Day” featuring brave first responders & their canina partners! Free admission for kamaʻāina (must show ID).
  • Sat Aug 5: Kundalini Yoga & Breathwork, 10-12pm at Hawaiian Sanctuary in Pāhoa.
  • Sat Aug 5: 13th Annual Mango Festival, 10-4pm at Hale Halawai Beach Park in Kailua-Kona.
  • Sat Aug 5: Kurtistown Jodo Mission Bon Dance, 6pm at 17-4025 Kuaʻaina Rd. in Kurtistown.
  • Sat Aug 5: Monthly Kona Soul Skate, 4-8pm at Old Airport Skate Rink in Kailua-Kona. BYO Skates & BYO Snacks. $5-15 donation.

Comedy + Entertainment

  • Thurs Aug 3: Pineapples Comedy Show, 8pm at My Bar in Kailua-Kona. Featuring Dakota Rivera, Kyle Biddle, and Kevin Hobbs. Tix are $10 or $15 at the door.
  • Fri & Sat Aug 4-5: Toil & Trouble, 7:30pm (or Sun Aug 6, 2:30pm) at Aloha Theatre. Find out what an old couch, a sword, and a miniature alpaca-type creature have in common in this modern take of Shakespeareʻs Macbeth thatʻs been described as Shakespeare meets Always Sunny in Philadelphia!
  • Sat Aug 5: Asteroid City (2023), 2:30pm at Palace Theater in Hilo. This must be really good, because this comedy/drama returns for a third weekend at Palace Theater! Follow a writer on his world famous fictional play about a grieving father who travels with his tech-obsessed family to small rural Asteroid City to compete in a junior stargazing event, only to have his world view disrupted forever. Tix are $10 general or $9 for seniors, students & military.
  • Mon Aug 7: Open Mic, 7:30pm at Hilo Town Tavern.
  • Tues Aug 8: Tuesday Taco Comedy, 6:30-8:30pm at Kona Elk’s Lodge. 2 tacos are $8. Comedy from 7-8:30pm followed by an open mic.
  • Tues Aug 8: Pineapples Comedy Open Mic, 9pm at My Bar in Kailua-Kona. 5 minute time slots for your music, comedy, and poetry!
